Happy Birthday SEND Support 🎉 🎂

Over a year ago I was struggling to pass the assessment to become a Makaton Tutor and I was changing jobs from being a 1:1 in a school to working in a Children’s centre.

People were asking me what to do about different situations to do with their child with additional needs and there was so much information all locked inside me that needed to get out. So one afternoon I sat down and created a Logo (I look at it now and the fonts make me cringe).

After I had the logo, I also got to making myself a website and writing my first blog post about Now and Next Boards.

I had no idea where it would take me. I’ve done similar things in the past and they haven’t gone anywhere, so the least I thought would happen is I could get all my thoughts down on paper or screen should I say.

Then a few months later I passed my Makaton Tutor assessment and SEND Support was truly born. I had entered the world of being a freelance tutor and needed to work out how to buy insurance, how to market myself and get into the realm of bookings and tax returns.

Also around this time I also started making resources for people and again my original stuff is a bit amateur, but I upped my game with the joys of a drawing app and started to use consistent drawings. In January of 2022, I opened an ETSY shop and got incredibly excited every time an order came in.

Bookings keep coming in for signing too as well as courses I book in, I often get contacted about training staff members at different organisations. And it’s been great!!

It’s taken me out of my comfort zone on so many different occasions. I’ve had to learn new skills like web design, making vectors, legal stuff, communication, marketing, finances and spreadsheets but do you know what I have loved it.

At the core of SEND Support is the drive to support families, to make every day a little more easier and to support families who have to work so much harder just to communicate with their children. I am still doing that a year later and I hope to be doing it for many years to come.

THANK YOU!
